Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. [By M. W. Shelley.] by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley5/13/2023 ![]() She transformed these supernatural elements an epic parable that warned against the threats to humanity posed by accelerating technological progress. Written when Mary Shelley was just eighteen, Frankenstein was inspired by the ghost stories and vogue for Gothic literature that fascinated the Romantic writers of her time. The results, for Victor and for his family, are catastrophic. In the grip of his obsession he constructs a being from dead body parts, and animates this creature. ![]() It tells the dreadful tale of Victor Frankenstein, a visionary young student of natural philosophy, who discovers the secret of life. Frankenstein is the most celebrated horror story ever written. ![]() He held up the curtain of the bed and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. By the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window-shutters, I beheld the wretch-the miserable monster whom I had created. ![]()

![]() ![]() The great thing about this memoir is his passion for truth and life that courses through its pages. ![]() “…the Oliver Stone depicted in these pages - vulnerable, introspective, stubbornly tenacious and frequently heartbroken - may just be the most sympathetic character he’s ever written… neatly sets the stage for the possibility of that rarest of Stone productions: a sequel.” - New York Times Book Review “Fantastic…the dual theme of chasing and being chased by the light is central to Oliver’s life story…there are luminescent passages throughout this book to crack open the reader’s consciousness to a second reality… Chasing the Light is not a superficial trip down memory lane like so many memoirs by famous people Stone is a wonderful writer, and as with his films, he takes you deep to places you may wish to avoid but are essential for true sanity. ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether you’ve already read this book (like me) or are thinking about experiencing it for the first time through Audible, DO NOT SKIP IT. I know Shane West but this was my first experience (that I know of) with Keira and I have say, she might have just become my fave female narrator.the way she narrates is so full of emotion and life without being too over the top or forced. ![]() ![]() It made it my fave Audible of the year by far. The way this is narrated is seriously a method I rarely see yet cannot understand for the life of me why more authors don’t elect to have it read this way (where each narrator reads their own parts regardless of what POV the chapter is in).instead of hearing either of them fake the opposite sex’s voice, I got the story as if I was truly there watching and listening to it all. Series: Royal Elite, Book 1 Length: 10 hrs and 55 mins Release date: 05-15-20 Language: English 1,000 ratings Regular price: 21. The Audible version though? Changed it all for me! These two narrators are absolutely phenomenal. However, when I read it I still couldn’t give it a perfect 5 because of those few issues I had with the twist. I had some issues with it (more so towards the end) but it was a BEAUTIFUL story and the one couple I believed in their love & connection long before their official installment ever released.I really can’t put into words just how special their story is, but it isn’t without difficulty and chaos. I LOVED the ebook version of this book, Cole & Silver being my fave couple and delivering the best story of the series. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gill gives us a marvelous book that is engaging and thoughtful about what constitutes beauty and why we need it."-Lee Trepanier, The Russell Kirk Center ![]() ![]() And, as Gill shows, this view had a huge impact on the development of natural religion, moral sense theory, aesthetics, and environmentalism.Ĭombining captivating historical details and flashes of humor, A Philosophy of Beauty not only rediscovers and illuminates a fascinating philosopher but also offers an inspiring reflection about the role beauty can play in our lives. But Shaftesbury argued that nature, religion, virtue, and art can all be truly beautiful, and that cherishing and cultivating beauty is what makes life worth living. In A Philosophy of Beauty, Michael Gill presents an engaging account of how Shaftesbury’s thought profoundly shaped modern ideas of nature, religion, morality, and art-and why, despite its long neglect, it remains compelling today.īefore Shaftesbury’s magnum opus, Charactersticks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (1711), it was common to see wilderness as ugly, to associate religion with fear and morality with unpleasant restriction, and to dismiss art as trivial or even corrupting. At the turn of the eighteenth century, Anthony Ashley Cooper, the third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671–1713), developed the first comprehensive philosophy of beauty to be written in English. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This time around, the story is a little bit (but only a little bit) more down to earth and the reason for that, in the main, is that this story centres on a very lovely old woman called Mrs Whittaker who is a creature of routine and habit. If you’re familiar with the latter, the first thing that will strike you about Chivalry is this: Doran is something of a chameleon when it comes to style, each book adopting a look and feel that suits the story. Chivalry is (to the best of our knowledge) the second time graphic artist Colleen Doran has adapted a Neil Gaiman story from his 1988 collection Smoke and Mirrors (the first was her 2019 adaptation of Snow, Glass, Apples). ![]() ![]() ![]() See our gallery of 10 favourite Andrew Wyeth paintings.
